And it's time now to check in with our Jamison Moyer
for the stories that are trending right now
on Fox5Atlanta.com and the Fox local app.
Hey, Jamison, you still have those Oreos by your desk?
Hey, Tyler, I do have the Oreos
and now I have some chocolate chip cookies
because Cal Calloway just went to the store
and brought us some.
So we got a little bit more added to the stash, by the way.
But back to the news.
So our first story is a story out of California.
Charges have been filed in the shooting death
of a reality TV personality in downtown Oakland over the weekend.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged 38-year-old
Vernika Dunbar with involuntary manslaughter
in the death of her sister.
Her sister is 29-year-old Mikayla Page, known to fans as Cash,
and she was on shows like Real West Coast Baddies.
According to the Oakland police,
what happened was officers were responding
to a shooting near 14th Street and Harrison Street.
around 1:30 Sunday morning outside of the Cage Lounge.
Investigators say that Dunbar was
attempting to pistol whip a woman
who was fighting with her sister, but she ended up
accidentally firing a fatal shot and killing her sister.
Police have not yet released what led to
the initial fight, but this is just awful.
And I can't imagine how the emotions that are going on
around this story, Tyler.
Yeah, I'm sure that family incredibly heartbroken and dealing with
a lot of emotions right now.
Let's turn to our next story, and this one actually affects a lot,
a lot of people. It has to do with Social Security
and the increase that's going to
happen because of cost of living.
Yeah, so let's get into it. The Social Security
Administration announced Wednesday that the 2027 cost
of living adjustment will be 3.6%.
Now, that is up from the 2.8% increase beneficiaries saw
when they were going into
this year. So for the average recipient,
that will translate to about $75 more per month starting in
January. Now, this increase applies to nearly 76 million people,
including retirees, disability
recipients, and those who are on SSI.
The figure was locked in after the government released
September's inflation data on Wednesday.
Now, expert official notices to arrive in the mail
expect sorry expect if i
was confused myself expect official notices to arrive in the mail
or on your online my social security account starting
in december tyler yeah i mean for
people who are on social security i mean
that's some good news they're gonna be able to get some
little uh a little bit more money in their wallet
to be able to afford more things um and uh i mean
obviously they they need to adjust for cost
of living obviously inflation and things like that
So I'm glad that they announced that today.
Absolutely.
Now, our final story is this crazy crash
that happened in downtown Acworth.
So it happened in downtown Acworth,
like I said, and it left this van that you see
in the picture suspended.
And you see the van is wedged between a townhome building
and the other side of the road.
Acworth police responded to this scene after they say
the driver lost control and overcorrected
while taking a turn. We got a lot of viewer photos and pictures of this,
and I don't know if you can
see, but behind there, it's a crane,
and they had to use this crane to help get the man out of the
vehicle. So far, police haven't released the identity of the driver,
and it's still unclear
if the man in the car was injured in this wreck.
He appeared to be all right from the video that
we received of them pulling him out of the van
but this is just crazy i have not seen a wreck
like this i don't think ever tyler have you ever seen anything like
this no i've not and i truly
when i saw a crazy video uh there's another piece
of video that we have that has been cleared that
viewer sent to fox 5 from brooke morgan i think it's another one
of her videos where you can see
the driver being pulled out by first responders i mean
the fact that it is literally levitating
in the air um and thankfully i think it didn't
drop down it didn't catch fire i mean there's a
lot of things that could have happened that did not happen
and thankfully i i mean i don't know
the full extent of the injuries for the driver
but this is obviously i guess you could say lucky
in a way because this could have
been so much worse absolutely i totally agree i mean like you
said we don't actually know the driver's medical status
but we did get to watch that video of them
pulling him out and he appeared okay not to say
that that's what police said but that's just how
he appeared and like you said it could have been so much worse
so just thankful that this didn't
end up in a worse way and if you want to watch more
of the video we do guys have it on our
website fox5atlanta.com and the fox local app
um and it's been shared there also on the social
media channels i think tiktok
and instagram i believe as well jamison moore thanks so much
for the update
Thank
you.
