Members of the Canadian Armed Forces are among seven men
facing charges related to a violent abduction
of the owner of a cryptocurrency exchange.
Weapons, ammunition and illicit drugs
were also seized as a result of that investigation.
The CBC's Jamie Strachan is at Toronto Police Headquarters
with what was uncovered.
All of this started with an attempted abduction
at the end of July in the northern part of Toronto.
that abduction investigation quickly spiraled
into something much larger.
The investigation led to a secondary location where
a large cache of weapons,
equipment, were seized.
You can see some of it here on the table. The key thing in
all of this is that the seven men that were arrested,
three of them members of
the Canadian Armed Forces.
Investigators also able to say that 2,500 rounds of
ammunition, much of which you can see right here,
taken from the Canadian Armed
Forces. The Canadian Armed Forces
not saying at this point whether they even
knew that that ammunition was missing.
Now the military link, obviously very
concerning to Police Chief Myron Demko
When you're dealing with people who have
a degree of training as we do with members of the Canadian Armed Forces
who are prepared to engage
in what's alleged here you know taking somebody off
the street by force that's incredibly
concerning it's concerning
because of what they bring to bear in the criminality that's been
alleged and concerning for our police officers who would be responding.
Now these seven arrests
here and all of this equipment
that was seized police unsure whether there are links to anything
wider that investigation continues police did say
that there's been 14 other abductions so far in
the city this year 12 of those have been solved
but the links to the military especially concerning
CBC has reached out to the Canadian Armed Forces
for comment has not heard anything yet
