Today we'll travel to the heart of the Caribbean—Cuba. What do we know about it? Many have heard of it as the Island of Freedom, the birthplace of cigars and rum. Some will recall Hemingway and his "Old Man and the Sea," others the fiery salsa and Cuban beaches, and still others Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. Cuba is far, far away, unless, of course, you live there. But today we'll look at Cuba from a different perspective.

Few people know that Cuba is not one, but more than four thousand islands, stretching for 1,200 kilometers like a giant, curved crocodile, slumbering at the confluence of the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico. At one end of the island rise majestic mountain ranges with tropical rainforests, while at the other lie vast karst plateaus with cave systems and unique hills. The coastlines are lined with the Caribbean's largest mangrove forests, and beneath the waves lie some of the most impressive coral reefs on the planet. Both on land and in the sea, these islands are home to amazing animals and plants found nowhere else in the world.

So today, we're heading to Cuba to explore the structure of this amazing archipelago and what makes it so fascinating. Let's go...
