AI Began Reading What Vesuvius Buried… Some Words Should Have Stayed Buried

The volcano that buried Pompeii also buried the only library from the ancient world that came down to us whole: hundreds of scrolls, burned to charcoal. The first people who tried to read them cut them in half and scraped them away a layer at a time. Others burned them for heat, lost a quarter of the library to experiments, or shut the doors on anyone who came with a better idea.

Now a machine is reading them without touching a page. It read one word at a party, a lost book about pleasure, and a scroll that had officially been rated unreadable, from beginning to end. Then a sharper scan showed whether the machine had made any of it up. This video follows every attempt to read that library, and who is still keeping the rest of it in the ground.
