Scientists Thought Our Black Hole Was Harmless. Now They’re Watching It 24/7

For as long as anyone has watched it, the black hole at the center of our galaxy looked harmless. It has fired twice. Now it's loading up again, and this time, it's different.

Its last blast lit up gas far outside the galaxy and kept burning for 300,000 years, and the marks it left are still moving. A smaller one, hiding behind the dust, turned out to be aimed straight at us. The monster itself flared a million times brighter, and nobody on the ground felt a thing. And right at the edge of its mouth, it's wound tight, built the same way as a monster in another galaxy that's firing right now.

This is why the telescopes keep going back to that one spot behind the teapot, and why, if it has already fired, we'd never see it coming.
