The Battle That Saved Greece — Plataea (479 BCE)
The Persian Empire sent a quarter of a million men into Greece, and almost no one alive today knows how it actually ended. Not at Thermopylae. Not at Salamis. At a battle most people have never even heard of — Plataea, 479 BCE.
This is the true story of how a handful of divided, quarreling Greek city-states stood against the largest empire the ancient world had ever seen, survived a water crisis, a chaotic night retreat, and a dawn assault that should have ended in total disaster — and somehow changed the course of Western civilization in a single morning.
🏛️ From the rise of Xerxes and the fall of the 300 Spartans, to the burning of Athens — twice — and the final, brutal collision at Plataea, this is the battle that decided whether democracy, philosophy, and Greek freedom would survive at all.
