Wakan Tipi (sometimes known as Carver's Cave) is an ancient natural cave in the St. Peter Sandstone formation. It was long known to the local Dakota people who lived in the area. English explorer Jonathan Carver described it in 1766 as being of "amazing depth" and having "strange heiroglyphycks" cut into the stone. I looked for some of these carvings but was unable to conclusively identify any. The cave is currently flooded and mostly under water. The entrance has been modified and damaged by railroad expansion over the last century.
