Moments When 200cm Tall Zehra Gunes Shocked the World !!! Zehra Güneş is one of the most recognizable stars in women’s volleyball, combining powerful blocking, quick attacks and an imposing presence at the net. Born on July 7, 1999, in Kartal, Istanbul, the 198 cm Turkish middle blocker wears jersey number 18 and represents both VakıfBank Istanbul and Türkiye’s national team.
Güneş began playing volleyball at age 12 in VakıfBank’s youth system. Her journey included a loan to İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor in the 2014–15 season, followed by a return to VakıfBank’s second team in 2015–16. She spent the 2016–17 season on loan at Beşiktaş before joining VakıfBank’s senior squad in 2017–18. Since then, she has remained with the Istanbul powerhouse, growing from a talented academy prospect into an internationally established middle blocker.
With VakıfBank, Güneş has won multiple Turkish league championships, Turkish Cups, Super Cups, CEV Champions League titles and FIVB Club World Championships. Her individual achievements include the 2022 Turkish league MVP award and Best Middle Blocker honours in the CEV Champions League in 2022, 2023 and 2026. Her ability to stop opposing attackers and deliver fast attacks through the middle has made her an important part of VakıfBank’s success.
Her international career began with impressive results at youth level, including Türkiye’s victory at the 2017 U23 World Championship. With the senior national team, she earned silver medals at the inaugural Volleyball Nations League in 2018 and the European Championship in 2019. In 2023, she helped Türkiye capture both the VNL and European Championship titles, earning Best Middle Blocker recognition at both competitions. She also represented her country at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.
At the Volleyball Nations League 2026, Güneş helped Türkiye claim its second VNL title with a 3–1 victory over Brazil in the final in Macao on July 26. Her official tournament statistics recorded 67 points, consisting of 38 attack points, 23 blocks and six aces. She averaged 9.57 points and 3.29 blocks per match, with an attacking efficiency of 46.34%.
Among her strongest performances was a 13-point contribution against Japan, featuring nine attack points and four blocks. Against Thailand, she scored 10 points, including an outstanding six blocks, demonstrating how much damage she could do through defence alone.
Güneş continued contributing in the knockout rounds, scoring 12 points against Canada in the quarterfinal, including seven attacks, three blocks and two aces. In the semifinal against China, she added eight points, split evenly between attacks and blocks, as Türkiye secured a commanding victory. Her blocking was a key part of the team’s control at the net.
In the championship match against Brazil, she contributed three points—one attack, one block and one ace—as Türkiye secured the trophy. Throughout the tournament, her presence in the middle complemented the team’s powerful wing attackers, helping turn defensive pressure into scoring opportunities.
