In 1956, she owned about nine things she would have called clothes. Not one of them is on this list.
Not because these things did not exist - she owned most of them. Sneakers were in the house. Shorts were in the drawer. Flip-flops were in the car. She simply never got them confused about where they lived.
Every item here was equipment. Built for one activity, in one room. And over sixty years, one at a time, every single one of them walked out of that room and onto the street.
We did not become more casual. We got dressed in other people's uniforms and called it freedom.
