Ruby and Tom compare two contrasting air travel philosophies on a trip to Lanzarote: one prioritizing high-end luxury and the other focusing on extreme budgeting. By tracking their spending and comfort from security to landing, they evaluate whether the travel day should be an indulgent part of the holiday or a cost to be minimized.
Today I'm flying to Lanzarote and I'm going to try and do it for as cheaply as possible.
I'm going to spend nothing, nilch, nada. I've even packed a sarnie.
A homemade sandwich, can you? Look at that. I think I'll trot on it.
I've booked the cheapest flight I could find with EasyJet going out today.
We're going to go ultra low budget.
And I am flying to Lanzarote with no expense spared.
It's a peach bellini, so cheers everybody.
I have got the best lounge here at Gatwick,
and I've also got the best seat I could possibly get on the plane.
So I know who got the better end of this stick, guys.
We're actually on separate flights. It's going to be amazing.
Come along with us as we try and answer the age-old question.
Is it better to save every penny you can on getting there
and have more money to spend for your holiday?
Or is the travel day part of the experience?
And should you lavish yourself with gifts and have that luxury experience?
We're going to help you find out. Let's go.
Okay, so we arrived together and we'll just get through security
and then we'll separate and start our journey.
Tom, we're going to separate now because I have booked Fastrack.
So she's in the old Fastrack security.
Well, I'll go with the normal people then, shall I?
Oh, well, I'll see you later.
All right, I'll tell you when I get through.
Right now it is 20 past 12.
Right, so here we are at Fastrack. It is 12.23.
I will let you know how long it takes me to get through.
Right, so that was four minutes from start to finish,
and now we are here at duty free.
There we go. In we go.
Time for a little bit of spritz.
Let's go over to the perfume. You've got to smell good for that flight.
Oh, so there's lots of perfume on offer,
but I asked Madison what perfume shall I try while going through the airport
and she said to try Alien.
Here we go. So Alien.
Oh, there's lots of different types of Alien.
Let's go for this purple one here.
Oh, I like that. That's very, very nice.
I bet it's expensive.
It is £79 for 90ml.
I said no expense spared.
You know what? I'm going to go for that.
Why not? It is a luxury travel day after all,
so let's go pay for this and then head to our lovely lounge.
Shall I get a massive Toblerone as well?
I never understand why anyone would need a massive bar of Toblerone,
but I'm going to go for it because we're in Rome.
Right, so I smell good.
I have a giant Toblerone to my snap on the plane
and we've just got to find the lounge now.
Okay, guys, we're through.
Listen, that took exactly 10 minutes.
So that isn't worth spending extra money on.
I think with the new Smith machines, guys, you're never waiting long anymore.
So I think that's a one nil to the budget side of things.
I reckon definitely a one nil.
And another thing, another thing you can get for free,
you can still smell good for free.
You can try on all the really expensive fragrances for now for nothing.
So come with me.
Let's get our scent on, eh?
Quick spray.
That's the one I like, I think.
That's not a woman's, is it?
I'm on my own again and sometimes I accidentally spray women's perfume.
We're going to go for this one.
Eau de Soleil Blanc.
All right, we're going to try Eau de Soleil Blanc.
Smells nice.
I don't know if that was a boy's now.
Oh well, smells good.
So smell good for nothing.
Freebie.
Right, yeah, we're flying with EasyJet today, guys.
So I haven't paid for a seat.
So although I think I've got lucky and for free, I think they've given me seat F,
which is normally a window seat.
So I think we will get a nice takeoff for you for free.
So, so far we're doing all right.
Oh, who's that?
Oh, hello, Ruby.
How are you doing?
You all right?
Yes, how are you?
You got through, isn't it?
Yes, I did.
Thank you.
Yes.
Actually, it was only 10 minutes and cost me nothing.
So, yeah, right.
We'll see you later.
Have fun.
I think she's going to buy perfume, you know.
I think she's going to buy some.
The only thing I might need to buy is a bottle of water because I don't have one.
And I was supposed to stop, but we was late for the train.
This is Gatwick Airport, which is my favourite London airport.
There you go.
I've said it.
It is my favourite London airport.
It is big, bright, easy to use.
Look, look how beautiful it is.
Nice and it's like calm as well.
Although it's busy, everybody feels calm.
Yeah, we're not going to spend any money, although I would like to,
but we're not going to spend any money.
We're going to save some money.
I'm going to get me sandwich out in a minute.
Quick Whistlestop tour.
You have got loads of shops.
Big, bright, spacious area.
Got restaurants up the top here.
You've got Shake Shack, which does the most amazing burger.
I just found another freebie.
I was thirsty.
Oh, look.
So this is Wittards and in Wittards you get testers.
See, hot chocolate for nothing.
Cheers, guys.
There you go.
Wittards hot chocolate.
Didn't pay a penny.
Thank you very much.
We do actually buy Wittards because we're getting old and we're that type of people now.
Get nice hot chocolate and tea.
Oh, yes.
Oh, that's very nice.
There you go.
See, I got a drink.
Didn't pay a penny for it either.
Here we are.
We are at the club rooms here in Gatwick.
Wow, this is nice, isn't it?
So this is table service and champagne.
Nice.
Very nice.
Oh, pancakes.
So I'm going to check this out and order myself some bits and I'll show you what I get.
But I'm liking this.
I wonder what Tom's doing now with his sandwich left in.
I found somewhere nice and quiet to sit down because we've already been traveling like two
odd hours and it's time for my secret weapon.
See, Ruby spending all that money in the lounge, most likely.
I wonder what she's eating right now.
Hey, them brownies look nice.
I'm going to go for some of these, whatever they are.
Oh, my gosh.
Can you wait until you see what I've got?
Look at that.
They are loaded prawn tacos.
I am loving life right now.
Well, you can't beat a homemade sandwich, can you?
Look at that.
I think I've trot on it.
It's a peach bellini.
So cheers, everybody.
Well, hey, some more food has come out.
I got the chicken Caesar salad as well.
I definitely have eyes bigger than my belly.
Oh, well, you can't beat a homemade sandwich.
See, she might be getting all these luxury stuff and all that.
Now I've got here a masito.
The lady said she put strawberry in it for me, which is nice.
So, oh, I really like that.
But I smell good.
I've had a nice hot chocolate.
Look at that.
Look, that's a proper British sandwich.
Ham, cheese, mature cheddar, no less.
Bit of mayo.
What more could you possibly want, hey?
Who needs a posh old lounge?
All right, it's a bit warm.
It's a bit squished.
Mayo probably wasn't the best idea after a three-hour journey.
But it was cheap.
Anyway, I'm going to sit and eat this and watch the world go by, which again is free.
Really is a nice airport, right?
It's nearly that time.
I think we can see on the screen my flight.
So I'm EasyJet.
Ruby's TUI.
Let me know, is that posher?
I think TUI, a chartered flight, is a little bit posher, isn't it?
So, Arrecife, there it is.
Easy, go to gate 567.
My gate will be showing in a few minutes.
I'm going to grab a coffee, I think, an iced vanilla latte.
Yeah, wait for my gate to pop up and then we'll head over there and I can show you
the plane I'm getting on and also where I'm sitting.
Yeah, I think I've got the best seat in the plane, well, I tried to get it anyway.
Gate 567.
We're not going to have another opportunity to get a drink, are we?
So I think we'll have to go back.
Quick little, quick tester, just to really make sure to see if we like that or not.
Tasted so nice, we had to try it twice.
It is good stuff, to be fair.
Get a Whittard's chocolate.
Right, to gate 557.
So, Club Rooms was wonderful.
That was so relaxing.
The food was incredible.
Highly, highly recommend.
So that would have been 44 pounds.
I'm going to find the gate now and, yeah, I'll show you the plane and where I'm going
to be sitting.
Okay, we made it.
Extra speedy boarding, that's not us.
We're not spending an extra penny.
We're getting on bog standard whenever they let me.
But we made it.
Most important bit, they let us on, guys.
And I think we're getting to go out on the tarmac.
I've got new headphones as well, Bose.
I left, if you've watched the video, I left my last headphones in Elchy somewhere.
Some lucky bugger now owns them.
We're going down.
I don't know about you guys, but isn't it fun to go out on the tarmac?
I'm always disappointed when you don't go out on the tarmac.
Here we are.
Yes, look at that.
Oh, I love it.
That plane looks all right, doesn't it?
GZXIA, so come on, plane people, tell me all about it.
That looks like a big engine on that one.
I always say that and you guys always tell me it's the same plane you always get on.
Oh, look, there's the TUI plane.
So they're the ones Ruby's probably going to be on in a bit.
Gate 565 is all the way over here.
And there she is.
There is the plane I'm getting on.
I'm flying with TUI today.
So I can't wait to show you where I've decided to sit.
I've gone for what should be one of the best seats on the plane.
It was the most expensive seat on the plane.
So yeah, I'm actually really excited.
Do you know what?
It's a seat that I've never actually flown by myself before.
So it's a little bit nerve wracking, but I'm glad you guys are here with me.
I'm on the airbridge, chained to the plane.
Do you know what?
I'm so excited to get some canary sunshine on my skin.
So there's Tom's plane.
He's in the middle of the wing, apparently.
All right, and there I am, seat 1A.
Look at this.
Nice bit of leg room.
Not bad, is it?
So here we are.
They've got Tom's room.
Let's see if we can see Tom.
So Tom is apparently in the middle window.
I'm going to wait if he can't see the ceiling.
Seat 1A.
Lucky bugger, lucky bugger.
We're on, we're on.
Seat 22F, down there somewhere.
Okay, I'm in.
It looks all right.
As seats go, can't complain too much.
Got the window seats, that's all right, isn't it?
Lucky me.
Seat's nice, a bit of space.
I've got a couple of secret weapons as well.
I will close the aircraft up and get everything ready to perform this test.
Thank you very much.
That is Ruby's plane right there.
We should have left by now.
Basically, we're staying here for a while because our left engine has been flagged
for some reason or another and we've got to close all the doors,
turn the engine on for 10 minutes, see if it is all right.
Which is a little bit concerning, but what are you going to do, eh?
I'm sure it'll be.
While we're here, because now I'm getting hungry again, I'll show you my stuff.
Everybody else is going to be getting food.
Sandwich left, it's looking a bit worse for wear, but we're good.
And a trusty baby belt.
We have got 20.
Thank you so much.
If you like what we do, drop us a subscribe, it really helps us out.
We've got loads coming up, loads of weird, wacky stuff.
We try and do some inventive things for you,
including flying on different airplanes at the same place because we're mad.
I'm sure Ruby will tell you what we're doing right about now, all right?
So, cut to Bruce.
We're flying, get on board.
Hello.
So, a quick review while I'm in the loo.
We are halfway through our flight right now and so far it is going very, very smoothly.
I must say the extra legroom is so nice.
Just to be able to move your legs around freely and sort of,
if you're not very good at sitting down for too long, which I'm not,
it's really good for fidget butts.
So, yeah, if you fidget a lot, it's really, really handy,
just to kick your legs about and move about a little bit.
Really spacious.
The cabin crew have been around twice now.
They came around for like food and drink orders.
I got myself a cappuccino and a Coke.
It comes to around £6 in total, so not the end of the world, not that cheap.
They've been around as well with some Duty Free,
which I've already got my perfume, so I didn't need to get anything.
Yeah, so that's it really.
So far the flight's gone very, very nicely.
I think we're running maybe 10 minutes behind,
but the captain said that hopefully he was going to make some time up,
so we'll see if we arrive on time.
But yeah, so far so good.
We did it guys, we made it.
We made it and Ruby's plane is right next door
and I just messaged her and I think she just made it too.
Thank you.
So, perks of being 1A, I was the first off and I can feel the warmth already.
It's 26 degrees.
We landed, let's have a little look.
We landed just five minutes later than scheduled, so that's not too bad.
Now, so hopefully I'll be through quite quickly
and then we'll meet Tom wherever he is.
So, pretty cool, although I reckon seat 1A was probably more comfortable than mine.
We are just about 50 minutes late, so just under an hour late,
which isn't the end of the world.
Not like you can do it without an engine needing checking, is there?
I'd rather it work all the way there.
But yeah, it was a good flight overall.
I was looked after well.
I was lucky to get the window seat so I could get a nice takeoff.
But yeah, overall, not too bad.
Now, there's one thing that she can't pay to get through quickly, which is security.
So hopefully the EES system is all working nice and properly.
Queue's really long.
The queue is really long.
All right, must have been a couple of hundred people in there,
but you've just got to tell them.
So most places, there's a place if you have done it,
but you've got to say to the guys, to the security,
that you've done it loads of times and they'll put you through.
But yeah, I'm straight through, five minutes.
But make sure you tell them, otherwise you'll do the whole process.
You'll have to queue up, stand, re-scan your thing.
It'll just say go to the next gate and you waste your life.
But yeah, we have got a car with Hertz today
and I only paid for my car 26 quid for four days.
26 pounds for four days.
So bargain, absolute bargain.
So that took five minutes to get through.
I did not need to go through the EES system.
I just told a member of staff I was here a few months ago.
I've already done that and she sent me through another queue.
So we went straight to E-gate and yeah, straight through.
Here is baggage claim, if you've got any luggage.
But as you know, we travel lightly.
So I don't have anything to pick up.
And I can find my very spoiled wife, hey, and see how her day's been.
Packed nice and light so you don't have to worry about
waiting for hours to get your stuff.
Because that adds another 40, 50 minutes on.
But yeah, we'll go to the outside.
That's where I'll put my car up.
Do you know what?
I go on holiday a lot, a lot.
But there is no better feeling than landing and being on holiday, is there?
It's awesome.
Yeah, I absolutely love it.
It never gets old.
I've done it probably 10 times a year for years and years
and I literally never get bored of it.
Very, very lucky.
I never forget how lucky I am.
Why, what's going on here?
Thou shall not pass.
Ah, there you go.
Really good airport, nice and simple.
Out there is where you get the bus.
Over here is where you got all your representatives,
all your TUI and Jet2 and all that.
And then you got the taxi line there.
The bus is cheap as chips, about £3 to get all the way to Puerto de Carmen.
So if you can, jump on that.
You're not too scared.
And the taxis, depending on the time of day
and how many people have landed,
you can be waiting a very, very long time.
But sometimes you got to do it.
All the transfers.
And this airport, the transfers are actually a little walkway.
You go round and up to like a big parking area.
It's not right next to it.
But yeah, and we've heard.
So I'm going to get my car and then I'll find my wife.
Well, I think I've just missed him.
I think he might be getting the car.
So let's have a little look.
Where is he?
I see him.
Hi.
Oh, there she is.
Here she comes looking all nice and relaxed.
Like she's had a spa day.
While I've been roughing it at the back.
Hello, Ruby.
How are you?
I'm all right.
Yeah, I'm all right.
Yeah, it was good.
It was okay.
Well, I'm a lovely guy.
How was the lounge?
I haven't seen anything.
It was lovely.
I had some fishies.
Oh, nice.
I had a sandwich that I'd sat on and it was a bit manky.
And I had a baby bell that had been in there far too long.
I'd put it next to my charger bank and then I'd charged it for ages.
And then I've been charging.
So it got really hot.
So when it come out, it was like, it was like elastic, sweaty sort of cheese.
But we're here now.
We're here.
I said, we're going to get the car and then we'll do a debrief of what we got up to.
We shall.
Right.
Okay, we picked up the car.
They gave me a new bonus, sprucey bonus one.
But Hertz, £820 deposit.
Ouch.
Now talking about money.
We sort of, on my flight cost £38 and I spent exactly zero getting here.
Nothing.
No drinks, no food.
I ate a sandwich that was questionable.
I had a bar baby bell that would be really super sweaty, but we got through it.
We didn't buy nothing off nobody.
And you, and you know what?
I'm here, aren't I?
I made it.
I'm not, I'm in the same place you are.
You are.
So I can't complain.
Look, beautiful Lanzarote.
The weather is stunning.
It's eight o'clock in the evening.
I was an hour over.
But would you say that was, that wasn't the price's fault, was it?
Anyone could have been late.
The engine nearly, they was whinging about the engine not working very well.
Anyway, Ruby, so.
Yes.
You spent closer to £240, we think, don't you?
Yes.
So with the flight, picking the seat, that was £100.
Yes, it was.
My heart.
So the flight was, hang on, the flight was £100 with the lovely seat.
And you spent another £140.
Somehow, yes.
I don't know how I did that.
Now, was it worth it?
Was it nice to go through no expense spared and enjoy yourself?
Oh my gosh, I had the best time.
I bet you did.
You had chicken wings.
She sent me a picture of her eating chicken wings, just out of order.
I'm eating a manky sandwich.
But yeah, was it a good experience?
It was a wonderful experience.
And if you can afford to do it and you want to splurge, I have arrived quite relaxed.
How much was the Toblerone?
£7.50.
Oh, that's not, I thought that was going to be like 15 quid, so that's not too bad.
That was very nice as well.
I think maybe a balance might be reasonable, don't you?
Like maybe because I spent nothing, but I really could have done with a drink
and it might have been nice to be in a lounge, might have been nice.
Maybe treat yourself once in a while to the lounge.
You had a great time.
I had a great time and I got myself some perfume.
So that was included in the price as well.
So minus the perfume, you're looking at about 160 quid, 70 quid.
Well, there you go.
So tell us guys, what are you more inclined to do?
Are you more inclined to just scrimp and scrape, get here and then you've got another,
well essentially I've got 200 quid more to spend on fun things while I'm here.
That's a couple of lovely meals out, isn't it?
That's a full day here, an extra night in a nicer hotel.
Or is flying an experience and you should enjoy it, should spend a bit more.
It is, it's one of them, isn't it?
Well, we'll leave it down to you to decide that.
I hope you've enjoyed this wacky little adventure.
It's very odd for us flying next to each other like that, but do you know what?
If it's something different, it's always a bit fun, isn't it, a bit exciting.
But yeah, so we're going to do loads and loads of vlogs while we're in Lanzarote.
It's one of our favourite places, including
putting our butts down to Puerto del Carmen right now and getting dinner
because I haven't eaten other than the lowly sandwich earlier on today.
And I could fit a crepe in or two.
Yeah, so we're going to get down to PDC and of course we'll take you along with us.
So guys, if you like what we do, like, comment, subscribe
and we will see you on the next one very soon.
Thanks for watching.
Bye.
