You seriously need to watch this video all the way through because our favorite backyard squirrel, Bella, actually talks to us!

My wife Ricky was hand-feeding Bella right on the deck railing this morning when something incredible happened. All of a sudden, Bella started making a very distinct, high-pitched vocalization. It sounds almost like a mournful cry, but her body language tells a completely different story. With zero tail flicking and absolute refusal to leave our side, Bella got within 6 inches of the lens and "talked" to us for over 3 minutes straight while enjoying her mixed nut breakfast.

WHAT IS BELLA TRYING TO COMMUNICATE?
In nature, baby squirrels use this specific high-pitched chatter (called a "Muk-Muk" sound) to signal their mothers for food. Because Bella has become completely comfortable with us, she is actually reverting to this baby sound to communicate! Since she stayed right next to us for 4 minutes without showing any signs of fear or danger, she is using this sound as an excitement-based vocal demand—essentially throwing a tiny squirrel tantrum telling Ricky, "Don't stop, give me those nuts faster!" It is the ultimate sign of pack trust.
