Something Is Hiding Behind California's Cliff Collapses Scientists Can't Explain

California’s coastal cliffs are collapsing—and homes, roads and entire communities are moving closer to the sea.

From the 400-foot bluff failure in Rancho Palos Verdes to threatened buildings in Pacifica and landslides near San Clemente, the warning signs are becoming impossible to ignore. Waves are cutting into the cliffs from below while rain and groundwater weaken them from within.

Using lidar scans, satellite measurements and underground sensors, scientists are tracking movements invisible to the human eye. Their findings reveal why California’s cliffs can remain still for months before suddenly collapsing within seconds—and why seawalls may not be enough to stop what comes next.

Which parts of California’s coast should be protected, and where should communities begin moving back?
