Caterpillar Stuns The World With Its Colossal Mining Machine

ExploreTech Machinery

Caterpillar's 6090 FS is the biggest hydraulic excavator in series production, but it was born in Dortmund, Germany, not in the USA.

One bite of this 1,000-ton shovel lifts about 93 tons of rock, every 30 seconds, all day long. We take it apart piece by piece: the 52 cubic meter bucket, the two 60-liter Cummins QSK60 engines from the Indiana engine maker Cummins, and the real horsepower figure of 4,500, not the 9,000 you see online. Then the story behind the paint: the machine began as the O&K RH400, passed through Terex and Bucyrus, and became a Caterpillar after the Bucyrus deal in 2011. Today it is built in Indonesia and sold under an American name.

An honest look at the biggest hydraulic shovel in the world: German engineering, American engines, global production.
