Bonsai is a plant that can be grown to the maximum height of multistoreyed building , but grown in a small pot , due to which it has stunted growth.

Kamala in this story compares her life with that of Bonsai. When her sister got good education and got job , Kamala's life is confined to her home. Just like Bonsai which depends on it's mistress for its survival, Kamala also depends on her husband even to buy curry leaves. On the other hand, her sister , Vani is self dependent like the tree which is grown to maximum height and gives shelter to many.

As she associated her life with Bonsai could understand it's feelings.
This story reveals women should get good education and should be self-reliant. Similarly Any plant that can be grown to maximum height should be allowed to grow to it's maximum height, should not be confined to a small pot that hampers it's growth.
