What JUST EMERGED Inside Great Lakes Is Almost Impossible to Believe

Only 17% of the Great Lakes floor has been mapped to modern standards.

That means most of one of the largest freshwater systems on Earth is still poorly explored.

In this DiscoverTube investigation, we look at what scientists are finding beneath the Great Lakes using modern sonar, robot boats, remotely operated vehicles and new mapping expeditions.

The discoveries are extraordinary:

Hidden shipwrecks.

Underwater sinkholes.

9,000-year-old hunting sites.

Strange microbial ecosystems.

Unexplained lakebed features.

And entire areas still waiting to be properly mapped.

NOAA surveys have already revealed dozens of wrecks and previously unknown features, while researchers in Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are studying sinkholes that may preserve unusual microbial life and ancient geological conditions.

Scientists have also identified submerged archaeological sites along the Alpena-Amberley Ridge, where hunters once followed caribou across land that is now deep underwater.

And this is only the beginning.

With roughly 83% of the Great Lakes floor still not mapped to the same modern standard, every new expedition has the potential to reveal something unexpected.
