The Sumerian Tablet That Says Enki Begged the First Species for Something โ And Describes What

n the Atrahasis Epic, the god Enlil can't sleep. ๐ด๐ Humanity has multiplied and grown so noisy that he decides to cut their numbers, and he sends a plague. ๐โ ๏ธ The wise Atrahasis turns to his god Enki and asks how long the gods will make people suffer. ๐โ Enki's answer is one of the strangest pieces of advice in ancient literature. He tells Atrahasis to gather the elders, have heralds proclaim a message across the land, and stop revering their own gods and goddesses. ๐ข๐ด Instead they should seek out the door of Namtar, the god of plague, and bring him a baked loaf and a flour offering. ๐๐ช The idea is that Namtar will be so embarrassed by the attention and gifts that he'll wipe away his punishing hand. ๐ณโ The elders build Namtar a temple, and the plague lifts. ๐๏ธโ
Centuries later, when Enlil sends a drought through the rain god Adad, Enki gives Atrahasis the same strategy, and Adad releases his rain. ๐ง๏ธ๐ Enlil is furious that his plans keep failing, and it pushes him toward the final solution, the flood. ๐ ๐ In this video, we walk through Enki's plague and drought workaround exactly as the tablets tell it. ๐
