Brazil vs Turkiye | One of the Most Dramatic Matches in Women's Volleyball History !!! Brazil took the opening set, but Türkiye fought back to claim the Women’s Volleyball Nations League 2026 title! In a thrilling final on July 26 at the East Asian Games Dome in Macao, China, Türkiye defeated Brazil 3–1 (23–25, 25–23, 26–24, 25–21), winning their second VNL championship after their historic first triumph in 2023.

Brazil started strongly behind Ana Cristina, building a 23–18 advantage in the first set. Türkiye scored four consecutive points to threaten a comeback, but substitute opposite Kisy Nascimento delivered the winning attack to secure the set 25–23.

Türkiye answered in the second set. Hande Baladın’s crucial block brought up set point, and Melissa Vargas finished the battle at 25–23. The third set was even tighter. Vargas scored an extraordinary 11 points, and Türkiye eventually won 26–24 when Ana Cristina’s attack went out.

The fourth set delivered another dramatic momentum swing. Türkiye led 8–2 and 13–7 before Brazil stormed back, with Ana Cristina’s serving run helping them take a 19–18 lead. Türkiye recovered in the closing stages, and setter Elif Şahin sealed the championship with a clever second-contact tip for 25–21.

Melissa Vargas produced a record-breaking performance with 33 points—the highest individual total ever recorded in a VNL final, across both the women’s and men’s competitions. She scored 27 attack points, three blocks and three aces, converting 51% of her attacks. Vargas was also named the Most Valuable Player of VNL 2026, repeating her MVP achievement from 2023.

Hande Baladın provided outstanding support with 19 points, including 17 attacks, one block and one ace, while İlkin Aydın contributed 15 points. For Brazil, Ana Cristina led the scoring with 25 points from 20 attacks, three blocks and two aces. Rosamaria Montibeller added 19 points, Julia Bergmann scored 15, and middle blocker Luzia contributed 11.

The statistics underline how closely matched these teams were. Both finished with 61 attack points and seven aces. Türkiye held a narrow 14–13 advantage in blocks and committed fewer unforced errors: 12 compared with Brazil’s 17. Those small differences proved decisive in a final filled with pressure and narrow set finishes.

Brazil reached the final by defeating Japan 3–1 in the quarterfinals and overcoming Italy 3–2 in the semifinals. That victory eliminated the reigning Olympic and world champions and ended Italy’s pursuit of a third consecutive VNL title. Türkiye defeated Canada 3–1 in the quarterfinals before sweeping hosts China 3–0 in the semifinals.

Both finalists finished the preliminary phase with nine wins and three defeats. Brazil placed third with 26 standings points, while Türkiye placed fourth with 25. Brazil entered the final having won their previous three major international meetings against Türkiye, including the Paris 2024 Olympic bronze-medal match.

Both teams also competed without important stars. Brazil were missing Gabi, Julia Kudiess, Nyeme and Tainara. Türkiye were without injured outside hitter Ebrar Karakurt, while Eda Erdem did not participate in VNL 2026. Despite those absences, both teams delivered an unforgettable championship battle.

For Türkiye, this victory added a second gold to their VNL collection, alongside their silver from 2018 and bronze from 2021. For Brazil, it was a fifth silver medal after runner-up finishes in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2025, leaving their pursuit of a first VNL title unfinished. Italy defeated China to complete the 2026 podium with bronze.
