Tutankhamun's Tomb: What Howard Carter Wrote at the Time

#AncientEgypt #Tutankhamun #HowardCarter
On the twenty-sixth of November 1922, an excavator held a candle to a small hole in a sealed doorway, and looked in. Behind him, his patron asked whether he could see anything.
This episode follows Howard Carter's own records of the discovery: the excavation journal, which the Griffith Institute at Oxford has transcribed, and the book he published the next year with Arthur Mace. They do not always agree. In the book, the answer to his patron's question is "Yes, wonderful things." In the journal, the same moment reads "Yes, it is wonderful."
What did the excavators find, step by step, in November 1922? What do their records say about who had entered the tomb before them? And how did they record and move everything they found?
