Cobra Style Serve by Mayu Ishikawa | One of the Best Servers in Volleyball History. Mayu Ishikawa is one of the leading stars of Japanese women’s volleyball, combining powerful attacks, intelligent shot selection and outstanding defensive skills. Born on May 14, 2000, in Aichi Prefecture, the 174 cm outside hitter is the captain of Japan’s women’s national team and the younger sister of Japanese volleyball superstar Yuki Ishikawa. However, Mayu has built an impressive career and a reputation entirely her own.
Her international breakthrough came in 2019, when she led Japan to gold at the FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship in Mexico. She scored 19 points in the thrilling five-set final against Italy and earned the tournament’s MVP award. That same year, she helped Japan win the Asian Championship, receiving both MVP and Best Outside Spiker honours, before making her senior World Cup debut.
At club level, Ishikawa developed with Toray Arrows before taking her talents to Italy, playing for Il Bisonte Firenze and Igor Gorgonzola Novara. She won the 2025 CEV Cup with Novara and signed for Turkish powerhouse Eczacıbaşı for the 2026–27 season. With Japan, she also helped secure a historic silver medal at the 2024 Volleyball Nations League.
Despite being shorter than many elite outside hitters, Ishikawa finds ways to challenge the world’s strongest blockers through timing, speed, precision and clever attacking angles. Her reliable reception, quick reactions and defensive consistency make her an important contributor throughout the rotation.
In the Volleyball Nations League 2026, Ishikawa recorded 215 points, including 200 attack points, six blocks and nine service aces. She averaged 16.54 points per match and registered an attack efficiency of 37.59%, carrying significant responsibility in Japan’s offence.
One of her standout performances came against Serbia on June 17. Ishikawa produced 23 attack points, one block and 13 digs in an unforgettable five-set battle. Japan fought through a dramatic fourth set, winning it 32–30, before taking complete control of the deciding set with a 15–7 victory. The final result was 3–2 for Japan, with set scores of 20–25, 26–24, 18–25, 32–30 and 15–7.
Against Thailand on July 9, Ishikawa delivered another impressive all-round performance, scoring 22 points through 18 attacks and four blocks while adding 16 digs. Japan won 3–1, with set scores of 25–15, 25–21, 22–25 and 25–22. She also scored 21 points against Brazil in the preliminary round, 18 against Poland and 15 against Türkiye.
Japan’s VNL 2026 journey ended in the quarterfinals against Brazil on July 22. Ishikawa contributed 15 points, all from attacks, but Japan lost 3–1 despite winning the opening set. The match ended 26–24, 22–25, 16–25 and 20–25 from Japan’s perspective.
From world champion and youth MVP to national team captain, Mayu Ishikawa continues to demonstrate her quality on the international stage. Her VNL 2026 performances showcased her attacking ability, defensive commitment and leadership against some of the strongest teams in women’s volleyball.
