The battle over the 2026 U.S. midterm elections is intensifying, with House Democrats accusing the Trump administration of using federal agencies to influence how the elections are conducted.
Democrats have raised concerns over the role of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in election monitoring, voter data and election enforcement ahead of the November 3 midterms. House Judiciary Democrats have also launched an investigation into the DOJ’s election-monitoring program after Republican officials in Wyoming complained about what they described as “aggressive, unexpected, and disruptive” activity during the state’s primary.
The Trump administration says its election-related actions are aimed at protecting election integrity, including efforts to verify voter rolls and address alleged noncitizen registration. The White House says DOJ and DHS are working on election-integrity enforcement.
At the same time, the Justice Department has ordered officials in 29 states and Washington, D.C., to preserve 2024 election records as it seeks access to detailed voter information. Courts have repeatedly rejected or limited some of the administration’s requests.
The controversy comes as Democrats and activist groups prepare legal and polling-place monitoring operations ahead of Election Day, while the administration rejects accusations that it intends to interfere with voting.
