Living in Longyearbyen, Norway | 101 Days With No Sunrise | 4K Travel Documentary

This is Longyearbyen, the main settlement of Svalbard, closer to the North Pole than to Oslo.

101 days of darkness is the number people repeat about this town, and the truth is heavier. At 78 degrees north the sun does not climb over the horizon for 112 days, and when it returns, the mountains hide it from the town for three more weeks.

Around 2,500 people from 66 countries live here, on an island where no road leads beyond the last house and polar bears use the same valleys as people. The last Norwegian coal mine has just been sealed, and the town is still full.

This is how a town lives through four months without a sunrise.

Extraordinary Earth goes to the places that stayed behind: the valleys, the islands and the edges of the map where ordinary life still runs on its own rules.

Every film is built from one question. How do people actually live here? Water, heat, roads, work, winter, and what happens to a place when the young ones leave. No presenters, no hotels, no top ten lists. The place itself, the numbers behind it, and the people who stayed.

From emptied villages and roadless coasts to mountain country Europe forgot it still had, Extraordinary Earth shows the world past the end of the tarmac, in 4K.
