Planning your first trip to Jiuzhaigou? You might be wondering, “It’s so far away—do I have to join a tour?”

For this trip, I decided to visit Jiuzhaigou independently. Starting in Chengdu, I took a high-speed train to Huanglong Jiuzhai Station, then a direct shuttle bus to Jiuzhaigou. With two days and one night, I wanted to find out how easy it is to make this trip on your own.

On day one, I arrived and stayed in Tiantangkou, near the park entrance. The next morning, I headed into Jiuzhaigou National Park.

I explored the park’s Y-shaped route, visiting the Shuzheng Lakes, Arrow Bamboo Lake, Panda Lake, Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal, Long Lake, and Five Color Pond.

I thought the turquoise lakes would be the main highlight, but seeing the park in person revealed so much more. Many of its lakes, waterfalls, and other water features owe their distinctive landscapes to travertine—mineral deposits that have formed over thousands of years.

Five Flower Lake and Five Color Pond were especially stunning. Even with cloudy skies and very little sunshine, the colors looked almost unreal.
