The most glorious period of Athens under Pericles lasted only fourteen years out of his more than 30 years in power. During his early governance, Athens was a state brimming with overflowing confidence and aggressive ambition, acting like a "war machine" focused relentlessly on expansion. This expansionist drive inevitably clashed with Sparta's interests, culminating in the Megara Incident, which directly led to the "First Peloponnesian War" and set the stage for later conflicts. Athens demonstrated terrifying comprehensive power, notably using only second-line units and reserves to decisively defeat the combined forces of Corinth and Aegina. The city’s ferocious temperament was further evident when, despite facing the Spartan army, Athens later occupied the major power Thebes, a move that stunned the Greek world and formalized the geopolitical confrontation between the two major camps. Join us as we explore the terrifying might and boundless optimism of early Athens under Pericles.
