In southern Iraq, there's a flooded square pit in the ground that tourists photograph without realizing what they're standing beside: the foundation of Etemenanki — "House of the Foundation of Heaven and Earth" — the 90-meter, seven-tiered ziggurat of Babylon that history remembers as the Tower of Babel.
