Something strange is happening across the Great Lakes.

Shorelines are shifting, powerful surges are appearing, unusual wave patterns are being recorded, and researchers are examining how changing water, weather and ground movement could interact across this enormous freshwater system.

In this DiscoverTube investigation, we explore the forces behind the Great Lakes’ most unsettling changes—from seiches and sudden shoreline erosion to subsidence, unusual currents, changing water temperatures and shifting ecosystems.

Across Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario, scientists use sensors, GPS measurements, satellites and sonar to understand how land, water and atmosphere interact—and why even small changes can create much larger consequences along vulnerable coastlines.

The Great Lakes have always changed, but the biggest question is whether multiple pressures are now combining in ways communities and infrastructure were never designed to handle.

What happens if the familiar shoreline can no longer be treated as permanent?
