Ran Takahashi vs Matt Anderson | Japan vs USA | Legendary Volleyball Match !!! Japan refused to surrender! In their first meeting of the men’s Volleyball Nations League 2026, Japan defeated the USA 3–2 on June 27 in Orléans, France. After twice falling behind, Japan fought back to secure a dramatic victory, winning 18–25, 25–21, 20–25, 25–22, 15–13.

The Americans controlled the opening set, but Japan responded in the second, scoring five consecutive points from 19–20 to reach set point. The USA regained control in the third and moved within one set of victory. Japan then trailed 20–21 in the fourth before producing a decisive 5–1 run to force a tiebreaker.

Japan built a 12–8 advantage in the fifth set, but the battle was far from over. The USA closed the gap to 12–11 and later 13–12, putting Japan under enormous pressure. With the match hanging in the balance, Japan held their nerve, and Ran Takahashi delivered the winning attack.

Ran Takahashi was Japan’s attacking leader, finishing with a match-high 26 points from 22 kills, two blocks and two aces. It was his highest-scoring performance of VNL 2026 up to that point. With Yuji Nishida absent and Yuki Ishikawa contributing seven points, Ran stepped up when Japan needed him most. Kento Miyaura also played a crucial role, adding 20 points, all from attacks.

Across the net, Matthew Anderson demonstrated his value in both attack and reception. Playing at outside hitter, he scored 16 points through 15 kills and one block, while recording a match-high 13 successful receptions. Anderson delivered four kills in each of the opening two sets and contributed important attacks throughout the match. His fifth-set kill brought the USA within one point at 12–11, keeping their comeback hopes alive.

Jake Hanes led the American scoring with 25 points, followed by TJ DeFalco with 17, Anderson with 16 and Merrick McHenry with 12. The USA finished ahead in attacking points, 69–66, and blocks, 9–4. Japan recorded four aces to the USA’s three and committed fewer errors, 25–29.

The victory extended Japan’s unbeaten run to seven matches and lifted them to 18 standings points, keeping them in first place. Coming just one day after another five-set victory over Iran, this was another demanding test of Japan’s resilience. The USA moved to a 5–2 record after a contest decided by just two points in the final set.
