Inside the Father Fish Store
What does a healthy natural aquarium actually look like? Take a walk inside the Father Fish store and see how natural fish tanks work when plants, fish, and the aquarium ecosystem are allowed to develop without constantly trimming, cleaning, and controlling their appearance.
Father Fish tours his freshwater aquariums and explains why a healthy aquarium doesn't have to look like a perfectly manicured aquascape. Some tanks are heavily planted and overgrown, while others contain community fish, angelfish, guppies, cichlids, goldfish, gouramis, breeding fish, and unusual species. You'll also see how much life can be maintained in smaller aquariums, including 10-gallon tanks.
Why does Father Fish allow aquarium plants to grow naturally? Can an overgrown aquarium actually be healthier for fish? How much can you keep in a 10-gallon aquarium? And what does a low-maintenance natural aquarium look like in a working fish store? This tour gives you a close look at the Father Fish natural aquarium method and the philosophy behind creating healthy, stable freshwater ecosystems.
Lou Foxwell, known as Father Fish, is a pioneer of natural aquarium keeping and the creator of the Father Fish Method.
His approach to planted aquariums focuses on building balanced, self-sustaining ecosystems using soil substrates, natural processes, and minimal maintenance. The Father Fish Method draws inspiration from the Walstad Method and the natural aquarium philosophy of Takashi Amano.
Before entering the aquarium industry, Lou spent 25 years as a missionary, serving a congregation of deaf worshipers. He later opened a tropical fish store, where he adopted the role of Father Fish.
His passion for fishkeeping began in childhood, inspired by his grandmother from Berlin, Germany. He went on to become a founder and original board member of the National Aquarium, where he helped shape its early development and leadership.
With decades of experience across the fishkeeping world, Father Fish shares practical knowledge on planted aquariums, dirt substrate systems, and natural ecosystem balance. He also provides plants, soil supplements, and tools to help hobbyists create thriving aquariums with less effort and fewer water changes.
