Akhenaten: Egypt's Strangest King

In the 14th century BCE, Amenhotep IV came to the thrones of Egypt. While he seemed a perfectly traditional pharaoh at first, within a few years he’d launched a major religious revolution, repudiating Egypt’s many gods in favor of a sun deity called the Aten, and he changed his name to Akhenaten to reflect his devotion. The curious reign of Akhenaten and his wife Nefertiti is an outlier in Egyptian history, and has been claimed to be the first instance of monotheism in ancient history. In this video we’ll investigate who Akhenaten was, what he did, and what it means. The answers may surprise you.

There are too many sources used for this video to list them all in this description. A fuller list is given in credits at the end. Some of the major sources used include: James K. Hoffmeier, Akhenaten and the Origins of Monotheism (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2015); Erik Hornung, Akhenaten and the Religion of Light (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 1999); John & Colleen Darnell, Egypt’s Golden Couple: When Akhenaten and Nefertiti Were Gods on Earth (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2022); Jan Assmann, From Akhenaten to Moses: Ancient Egypt and Religious Change (Cairo: American University in Cairo Press, 2014); Adrian Dodson, Nefertiti, Queen and Pharaoh of Egypt: Her Life and Afterlife (Cairo: American University in Cairo Press, 2020); and numerous others.
