The migrating salmon will see them wait for heavy rainfall which floods the river and makes conditions ideal to swim up and over cascading waterfalls and other obstacles. The Salmon up to two feet long do this annually, coming back from the sea and swimming upriver to the spawning grounds to lay their eggs. Several attempts are made by the fish who leap several feet into the air and into the fast flow where they can swim up and over the falls. The fish are exhausted after such an event and many die after spawning. This event happened over several weeks in autumn on an Irish river.
