Vladimir Lagrange - Photographs.

Vladimir Lagrange (1939–2022) was a Soviet and Russian photographer whose work is associated with illustrated journalism and documentary photography in the USSR. Born in Moscow, he began working as a photographer in the late 1950s and joined the staff of Sovetsky Soyuz magazine in 1959. He later worked for publications including Ogonyok, producing photographic coverage of social life, youth culture, labour, and public events within the Soviet Union. His work was created within the framework of state-controlled media, where photographers operated under editorial direction but retained responsibility for visual composition and subject selection.
Lagrange’s photographs from the 1960s and 1970s document everyday life across Soviet cities, including Moscow, as well as travel assignments to other regions of the USSR. His images frequently depict public gatherings, leisure activity, sport, and street scenes, reflecting the visual language of Soviet illustrated magazines during the post-Stalin period. He also produced photographs during international assignments, including coverage in countries aligned with Soviet political and cultural exchange. His work was widely reproduced in periodicals and circulated through official publication channels.
His photographs have been published in a number of retrospective books and collections, including Vladimir Lagrange: Photographs 1960s–1990s (2010), Moscow 1960–1970 (2011), and The Time of Youth (2015). These publications present selections from his archive organised around specific periods and themes, drawing from negatives produced over several decades. His photographic archive, consisting of prints and negatives from the late 1950s onward, is held in Russian and international collections documenting Soviet-era photojournalism.
