For decades, dolphins have been cast as the ocean’s gentle heroes — rescuing humans, leaping through waves, and dazzling us with their intelligence. But research tells a more complicated story. Because dolphins, among the smartest animals on Earth, are also capable of shocking cruelty.

Male alliances that coerce females for days. Infanticide against calves they didn’t father. Attacks on porpoises for reasons scientists still don’t understand. Even humans, in rare cases, have been injured or killed by dolphins’ raw strength.
