Former Special Counsel Jack Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 29, 2026, and stood by his prosecutions of President Trump. He said he would bring the same charges again based on the same facts.

Chairman Chuck Grassley confronted Smith over his team obtaining at least 4,782 donor checks—many for $5–$10—containing names, addresses, bank account and routing numbers, and signatures from Americans in all 50 states. Smith confirmed his office acquired financial information as part of the investigation. Phone records of GOP lawmakers were also at issue.
ormer FBI agent, Navy SEAL, and Air Marshal Jonathan Gilliam tells John Solomon and Amanda Head the tactics look like a dragnet, not a standard case: word salad instead of evidence, pressure on witnesses, and special-counsel practices that would not fly in a normal investigation. He argues real cases require preliminary proof, a U.S. attorney sign-off, and a judge—not belief that someone “would” obstruct.

Gilliam points to repeated players and methods from the Steele dossier forward and says the same behaviors Smith’s team attributed to the right are visible in how these probes were run. He says peeling back that record would show who did what.
