The Romantic Paintings of Carl Spitzweg

Carl Spitzweg (February 5, 1808 – September 23, 1885) was a German romanticist painter, especially of genre subjects. He is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Biedermeier era. The Biedermeier period being a time between the mid 1810s and the late 1840s in which the art and culture of Germany began to cater towards the tastes of the growing middle class. Visual works in this style attempted to portray the world in a realistic and yet still sentimental way, perhaps a contradiction to some, but the art speaks for itself.
