Agnieszka Banasiak is a contemporary Polish artist known for her distinctive acrylic paintings on canvas that delve into themes of identity, emotion, and symbolism. She began her artistic career in 2010 at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, where she initially studied Art Education in the Visual Arts Faculty. After obtaining her Bachelor's degree in 2013, Banasiak shifted her focus to drawing and completed her Master of Arts in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Wiesława Limont and Dr. E. Jabłońska. Her diploma work received distinction and earned her the first nomination for the Janusz Bogucki Medal.
A member of the Toruń District Association of Polish Visual Artists, Banasiak's art centers on the representation of people, with a particular emphasis on women. Her recent series, “Hidden Beauty,” inspired by Roman Cieślewicz’s 1963 magazine cover collage, explores themes of mystery and self-representation. Each painting in this series features women dressed as various characters or portraits, symbolizing their inner worlds and emotions through symbolic clothing and visual metaphors. Banasiak’s work is also influenced by the surrealist collages of Madrid-based photographer Pablo Thecuardo and the iconic American Gothic of David Hockney and Wood Grand.
In her practice, Banasiak combines traditional techniques with contemporary elements of pop culture, creating art that challenges viewers to consider the deeper meanings behind her depictions. Her experimental approach and fascination with both historical and modern art forms mark her as a significant voice in contemporary visual arts.
