In 2026, I traveled to Xishuangbanna in southwest China to تجربه the country’s biggest Water Festival — the Dai New Year celebration.

This is more than just a water fight. It’s a spectacular multi-ethnic cultural parade featuring the Dai, Bulang, Hani, and other ethnic groups. With traditional costumes, vibrant dances, music, and decorated floats, this festival showcases the incredible diversity of China’s border regions.

Often compared to Songkran in Southeast Asia, China’s version of the Water Festival has its own deep cultural roots and unique traditions.
