For the second year in a row, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stepped up to the main podium to speak before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on behalf of Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Over the past week, world leaders have stood before their counterparts at the annual gathering, speaking on major global issues affecting them and successes in their respective countries.

Anand’s speech on Saturday at the assembly’s 81st session touched on Canadian foreign policy toward Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as Arctic sovereignty and the Canada-U.S. trade war, among other topics.

“We can no longer afford to be overly reliant on any one partner. Instead, we are diversifying our ties and building stronger relationships… so that our people can enjoy peace and prosperity,” Anand said.

Anand's speech comes days after a speech by U.S. President Donald Trump, who did not address the ongoing trade war but acknowledged his recently signed Arctic security deal with Denmark and Greenland. Trump has previously pushed for the U.S. to annex both Greenland and Canada, partly because of their presence in the Arctic.
