Though shattered by the news that their vivacious 11-year-old daughter, Brooke (Vanessa Marano and Lacey Chabert), is paralyzed from the neck down as the result of a tragic accident, Jean and Ed Ellison (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and John Slattery) refuse to let her dreams die. Jean remains at Brooke's side, serving as companion, caregiver, tutor, and advocate in the face of a daunting bureaucracy and the seemingly endless doubts of those charged with her care. Brooke eventually returns to her junior high school, where she proves herself an extraordinary student and is accepted at Harvard University where, with the help of her devoted and determined mother, she graduates with honors. Director Christopher Reeve died just weeks before the debut of this final project in a remarkable career.
