The name on the map may be changing—but something far bigger is happening beneath Lake Ontario.

In spring 2026, the lake rose about 2.5 feet in only two months. At the same time, scientists are tracking invasive quagga mussels, unusually low offshore phosphorus, massive round goby populations, PFAS, mercury, microplastics and major changes to the lake’s food web.

In this DiscoverTube investigation, we go beyond the Lake America naming controversy to examine what researchers are discovering beneath one of North America’s Great Lakes—and why some of these ecological changes may take generations to reverse.

Sources include research and data from the USGS, International Joint Commission, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Great Lakes fisheries researchers and U.S. federal records.
