What Was Just Found Off Australia's Coast Shouldn't Exist

Off the coast of Western Australia, in water barely deep enough to stand in, divers found something that shouldn't have been there at all. Stone tools. Grinding stones. Cutting implements. Sitting exactly where they were left, on ground that was dry land before the ocean rose up and swallowed it.

We're pretty much tracing the discovery of Australia's first confirmed underwater Aboriginal archaeological sites, 269 tools recovered from Cape Bruguieres, a submerged freshwater spring at Flying Foam Passage holding artefacts over 8,500 years old, and a working theory about what one particular grindstone was actually used to make. Researchers now believe thousands more sites like this could be sitting along the drowned edge of this continent, an entire chapter of history nobody thought was recoverable, waiting directly beneath the surface the entire time.
