Andrew Ng: One Skill to Stay Relevant in the Age of AI

We asked Andrew Ng, "What's one skill professionals should start learning now if they want to stay relevant in the age of AI?"

His response: "I have a controversial opinion. I think that everyone should learn to code."

Andrew Ng, Adjunct Professor at Stanford University and founder of DeepLearning.AI, explains that he's already seeing a productivity gap between professionals who can build custom software and those who can't, in every role, not just software engineering.

He's not arguing you should write code by hand; he says he rarely does. His point is that for the foreseeable future, one of the most valuable skills will be the ability to tell a computer exactly what you want it to do... and code is the language of computers. His best marketers don't wait for an engineer to build them a website. His best recruiters write code to screen resumes instead of reading them by hand.

So the question a lot of people are asking, "Should I learn to code if AI can write code?" has an answer Ng thinks is backwards in most business advice. Despite senior leaders telling people not to bother because AI will automate it, he argues that AI assistance has made coding easy enough that it's worth everyone learning.
