What Was Just Found Off Victoria's Coast Was Never Meant To Be Found

In March 2026, divers solved a maritime mystery that had lasted nearly a hundred and fifty years when they found the iron steamship City of Hobart sitting upright on the seabed sixty metres below the surface off Victoria's Gippsland coast. It had been missing since 1877. The same survey that found it detected a second unidentified wreck nearby. Victoria has approximately 660 recorded shipwrecks. Only half have ever been located. One of the missing ones left Melbourne in 1853 carrying nearly three tons of gold, one hundred and ten passengers, and a crew that had already been boarded by detectives arresting known criminals before the ship even sailed.

It was never seen again. And over Bass Strait in 1978, a twenty year old pilot radioed air traffic control to report something hovering above his aircraft, said the words it is not an aircraft, and disappeared without a trace.
