You Won’t Believe What JUST HAPPENED Off Oregon’s Coast — Scientists Are Paying Attention

Something is happening beneath the Pacific Northwest — and scientists have spent years monitoring the enormous fault system lying just off Oregon’s coast.

In this video, we investigate the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the powerful megathrust fault stretching from Northern California past Oregon and Washington toward Vancouver Island. Scientists monitor earthquakes, episodic tremor and slow-slip events, seafloor geology, coastal deformation and tsunami hazards to better understand what could happen when Cascadia eventually produces another major earthquake.

Oregon sits beside one of North America’s most significant earthquake zones. The last great Cascadia earthquake occurred in January 1700 and generated a tsunami that crossed the Pacific. Today, researchers use seismic networks, GPS measurements, ocean observations and geological evidence to study how this massive tectonic system behaves.

Could changes deep beneath the Pacific Ocean reveal more about the next Cascadia earthquake? What would a magnitude 9 megathrust earthquake mean for Oregon’s coastline, Newport, Coos Bay, Astoria and the wider Pacific Northwest?
