Dinner Time With Dementia: Independence Still Matters 💜

I stopped by the memory care facility to make sure my mom ate dinner. The nurse had seated her in the dining room, but Mama got up and walked away. I asked the staff to place her tray in her room and went looking for her.
When we got to her room, she acted like she was fully expecting me to feed her 😅 — but instead of taking over, I encouraged her to try on her own. And y’all… she did a fantastic job.
This is what dementia caregiving really looks like: meeting them where they are, encouraging independence, and celebrating the small wins. These moments may seem minor, but they matter—especially when navigating Alzheimer’s, dementia, and memory care.
One meal. One moment. One win.
