The Process & Master Tips
The Foundation: I start with a simple Raw Umber sketch using straight lines to block in big shapes. Don’t worry about likeness yet—focus on angles and proportions.

Embrace the "Ugly Stage": Beginners often rush to midtones. Stay in the drawing phase longer! Accurate drawing is 80% of a successful portrait.

Simplify Values: I break the image into three main shapes: the negative space, the dark hair mass, and the light face shape. Squint to see these big masses clearly.

Master Copies: My biggest tip for improvement? Copy the masters like Sargent, Zorn, and Velasquez. Seeing how they handled brushwork and values is better than any art school.

Limited Palette: I recommend starting with a Limited Palette (Zorn Palette). It helps you master color harmony without getting overwhelmed by too many tubes of paint.

Contrast Secrets: To make a light area pop, don't just add white—try darkening the values around it. Save your brightest highlights and darkest darks for the very end.

Advice for Beginners
If you are just starting, do Master Copies in pencil or charcoal first. Move to monochrome oil painting (Grisaille) before jumping into a full color palette. Learning to handle one medium at a time is the fastest way to progress.
