Soil-Eating Elephants on the Carer Cam

Did you know that elephants eat soil?

Carer Godknows films this intriguing behaviour while out with the herd in the reserve.

Elephants eat soil to supplement their strictly plant-based diets with vital nutrients, a natural behaviour known as geophagy. Because an elephant's diet consists mostly of grasses, bark, and leaves, they frequently miss out on essential minerals that plants cannot provide in large quantities.
