US President Donald Trump said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had acknowledged his role in settling the conflict between Yerevan and Baku.
Trump made the remarks while addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Trump said that since taking office, he had managed to settle eight conflicts and had developed friendly relations with the leaders of many of the countries involved.
He noted that many of those conflicts had lasted for years or even decades. According to Trump, he had used personal relationships with leaders, trade, tariffs or the prospect of imposing them, as well as other tools depending on the country, to help achieve settlements.
He cited conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, as well as Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Trump said President Aliyev had told him that it had taken the US president six months to achieve what he described as a miracle and something many had believed impossible.
Recall, The US Chargé d’Affaires in Azerbaijan Amy Carlon has said that numerous developments are currently taking place in US-Azerbaijan relations. “In September, US companies will participate in the Azerbaijan Defense Exhibition, and other delegations will also visit Azerbaijan. Therefore, we are very pleased to continue our cooperation within the framework of the strategic partnership,” the chargé d’affaires noted.
Touching upon the issue of Section 907 regarding Azerbaijan, she said that the suspension of the imposed restrictions has been secured for the next year. The diplomat emphasized that the US is committed to working jointly with Azerbaijan in this direction within the framework of the strategic partnership.
Earlier, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev said in an interview with Newsmax that Azerbaijan is a reliable partner of the United States in the South Caucasus region. According to him, US President Donald Trump’s efforts to achieve peace between Baku and Yerevan have changed the strategic landscape of the South Caucasus and opened a new era in relations between Azerbaijan and the United States:
“President Trump and his coming to power completely changed cooperation and partnership between the United States and Azerbaijan. And most importantly, it is peace. He brought peace to the South Caucasus region. President Trump’s leadership enabled him to use his political weight in this process and bring Armenia and Azerbaijan to peace.”
At the same time, Hajiyev recalled an important date for the South Caucasus — August 8, 2025, when, in the presence of President Donald Trump at the White House, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a historic joint declaration aimed at ending the conflict that had lasted for more than 30 years.
He emphasized that Donald Trump’s personal involvement made it possible to achieve a result that international diplomacy had failed to achieve for decades.
Speaking about Azerbaijan-US relations, Hajiyev noted that the current US administration had laid the foundation for a “new era” in strategic partnership with Azerbaijan:
“President Donald Trump and President Ilham Aliyev have proposed a new era in strategic partnership between the United States and Azerbaijan and agreed to prepare a new memorandum on strategic partnership between the two countries.”
He added that the United States had “kept its promise” when Vice President J.D. Vance visited Azerbaijan and signed the document on strategic partnership:
“Strategic friendship, cooperation and partnership between the United States and Azerbaijan have a strong foundation and will continue to develop in a region of geopolitical importance. Azerbaijan remains a reliable and trusted partner of the United States.”
