What Was Just Found Off Tasmania's Coast Shouldn't Exist

On the 24th of October, 1973, a group of exhausted men staggered out of dense Tasmanian bush and flagged down a car. They identified themselves as the missing crew of the MV Blythe Star, a freighter that had vanished eleven days earlier, triggering the largest maritime search Australia had ever conducted. The driver's first words back to them: "Nah, you're all dead."

We're pretty much tracing the story of the Blythe Star's sinking, the nine-day ordeal that killed three of its ten crew, and the wreck itself, undiscovered for exactly 50 years until a CSIRO research vessel studying an unrelated underwater landslide stumbled onto it by accident in 2023, with the last surviving crew member on board when it was finally confirmed. A ship close enough to shore for survivors to reach it on foot, and still lost for half a century.
