A monument could begin under one ruler and still be unfinished when his dynasty was already gone. Some ancient projects continued for centuries, passing from one generation of builders to another as plans changed, structures were enlarged, and unfinished sections were repeatedly reworked. In several cases, the final builders were working on monuments whose earliest construction phases were already ancient to them. Archaeology can sometimes identify these separate campaigns in stone, but not always explain why the work lasted so long, what the original design was meant to become, or why certain parts were never completed.
