A motorcyclist travels from France into Spain, exploring the scenic coastal routes of the Basque Country and the mountains of northern Spain. The journey highlights the beauty of San Sebastian and the Picos de Europa, though the trip is cut short due to the narrator's relocation from Germany to Switzerland.
What do we travel for?
For seeing stunning nature?
For visiting big cities?
For living the adventure?
Join my ride from France to Spain?
Discover the city San Sebastian
and the most beautiful roads along the sea?
And make new plans with me?
Because we all know, changes are part of life,
part of the journey, and part of each adventure.
These are our last meters in France,
but don't worry, we will travel through France again
on our way back.
And here is the border.
Look at this sign,
Hello, España, welcome to Spain.
Our ride for this day was only supposed
to take us a little further to the city San Sebastian,
but we decided to avoid the highway
and take the scenic route from Hondarribia.
I'm super happy to leave the main roads now,
and I hope we now will get some ocean views
for the first time of this trip.
Very close to the route we took with a motorcycle,
as well leads the hike from the city Jerun
to San Sebastian, which is part of the Camino del Norte.
The northern part of Camino Santiago,
known in English as the Way of St. James,
a network of pilgrims' ways leading to the shrine
of the apostle St. James the Great
in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia
in northwestern Spain.
Many follow the route of the Camino Santiago
as a form of spiritual path
or retreat for their spiritual growth.
It is also popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts
and organized tour groups.
Now it's as well super amazing weather.
I could not have imagined a better end of the day than this.
It's always a good idea to visit Spain, believe me.
Getting close to San Sebastian now,
I'm actually curious.
I was told that this is a lovely city,
but I have never stopped here before.
I only drove through once
because there are as well so many other great cities
here along the coast, like Bilbao, for example,
that I visited on my last trips.
San Sebastian is in Spain's Basque country.
The Basque country is an autonomous community within Spain.
Spanish is spoken as well as Basque
that is as well called Euskara.
Signs and menus are often in both languages.
That's why San Sebastian is as well known as Donostia,
which is the Basque word for San Sebastian.
The city was a favorite of the Spanish royal family
and it's easy to see why.
San Sebastian's appeal is largely
thanks to its stunning coastline.
It is blessed with three of the best in-city beaches
in Spain, La Concha, Ondareta, and Zurriola.
Whether you are a foodie, a surfer, a nature lover,
or if you prefer bar hopping,
the city of San Sebastian has something for everyone.
We decided to take a walk and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere
as much as possible before continuing our ride.
Now it's time to get rid of my sheepskin
that traveled with me through Africa,
but it got a little bit filthy,
so now it will go to the dump from here.
We are leaving San Sebastian today
and we are continuing on the Spanish coast, more or less.
We'll ride a bit inland,
but we will go direction Santander.
Good morning to the whole got-to-go travel crew.
We are now leaving San Sebastian
and we'll try to find some small roads
close to the coast today on our way to Portugal.
Oh my God, how cool is that?
All these kids here surfing.
It actually looks a little like a school class
that has surfing as a sport in their school.
But I don't know, maybe it's as well just vacation time
or something like that, but it's super cool.
The weather is very weird these days.
Now it's pouring down,
but we leave the highway in eight kilometers
to get on the coastal road
and actually the sky in that direction looks blue,
so fingers crossed.
Right after San Sebastian,
we decided to turn on route N634.
The rain had stopped for now
and we rode to the town Deba.
Wow, look at this view.
I tell you, riding these coastal roads is just worth it.
Very stunning.
Once we arrived in Deba,
we couldn't resist stopping to watch the surfers
and of course,
to have some typical Spanish breakfast sweets.
We're driving now along the coast
until the next town.
It's a lot of forest here though,
so not that many views, but beautiful curvy roads.
In Lecaizio, we left the coastal road
and traveled through the mountains
and rolling hills inlands on small roads.
To be honest, we have no real plan today.
We want to continue a little bit further west
direction Portugal,
but we'll stay on small roads as long as possible.
Instead of stopping in the city Bilbao,
we continued to ride along Amano Natural Park.
Look at these caves.
I would have liked to visit them,
but we can't walk so good due to my travel partner's foot,
so we might skip these ones.
The Cueva de Covolanas or Covolanas Cave
is a designated World Heritage since 2008
and was discovered in 1903.
The cave contains drawings that date from 19,000 years ago.
That's too bad.
I think this road here that we are riding normally
has a fantastic view
and it feels like a super nice mountain road.
And I heard as well that local motorcyclists love it,
but now we don't see that much.
Because it started to rain,
we finished our ride on small mountain roads
in the town Lirganes
and we looked for a place to stay.
And we found a lovely gem
that just had opened a few weeks ago.
Helguera Boutique Hotel is a 17th century palace
restored as an antique hotel
nestled in one of Cantabria's most secluded locations.
It indeed took us three attempts
to finally find the right way to the hotel,
but it was definitely the nicest place
that we had stayed on this journey so far.
Hello from Spain and from this beautiful place.
Today we're riding closer to the Piscos de Europa,
I think they are called,
which are some nice mountains here in the area.
But we will unfortunately not reach Portugal on this trip
because we have to cut this trip a little short.
I'm moving to Switzerland soon
and I have to fill out a lot of documents that came up now.
So trip will be short,
but we will enjoy the last days of riding.
Yes, you guys heard right.
I relocated myself from Germany to Switzerland.
And yes, it unfortunately meant
that our trip would be even shorter than expected.
Good morning, everyone.
What a beautiful day of riding.
We are going to the Piscos de Europa today.
And I always say Pisco,
like Pisco Sour, the alcoholic drink,
but it's actually Picos.
So I'm sorry if I will say Piscos in the future.
The good news is that we only take small roads today
because the Picos are not so far away.
And there is also some bad news.
The bad news is that we will not make it
to Portugal on this trip.
I have to be back in Germany sooner than I expected
because I need to prepare my relocation
from Germany to Switzerland.
So the Picos will be as far west as we get.
So we have enough time on our way back
to mainly ride on small roads.
And so I can as well still show you
some of my favorite places in Europe
to ride a motorcycle on my way back.
And we don't need to rush it.
That's why this journey will be kind of like
much shorter than we expected.
Some days of traveling are just better than others
because everything is all right.
Everything seems to be in a flow.
And this day was one of them.
Without much stopping, talking,
or any unexpected delays,
we rode to the Picos de Europa in northern Spain.
What a day of riding.
I don't even know what to tell you guys.
It's just beautiful.
I have really nothing else to say than that.
Come and ride in Spain.
I hope you enjoyed the ride from San Sebastian
to the mountains of northern Spain.
If you did, give this video a thumbs up and comment.
The next episode will take us through the mountain range
of the Picos de Europa on small roads
to foggy new adventures.
Tune in next Thursday to travel further.
