Crowland A Small Town with a Unique Medieval History

In this video we visit Crowland situated in the very south of the county of Lincolnshire which has fascinating historic attractions , Crowland Abbey a half ruined abbey which to this day is still in active use as the parish church of Crowland, and Trinity Bridge a unique three way medieval bridge. As well as some lovely little independent shops . Whilst Crowland is now generally used as the name of the town you will also come across the use of Croyland which literally means soft or muddy land The river Welland originally passed through the town and the Abbey itself was originally built on an island within the local wetlands. The bridge dates from the 14th century and spanned the River Welland and its distributary until the River was rerouted away from the town. The pretty town streets span outwards from the Bridge, Located on the Bridge is a statue of King Ethelbald the King of Mercia, which was moved here from the abbey. There has been an Abbey here since the 8th century although earlier examples were destroyed by fire. The present day abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1591 but still serves as the Parish church.
